Beyond Textbook Civics/Teaching the Confederate Monument Controversy
Allen, Stephanie Teachout
Educational Leadership, v75 n3 p46-48 Nov 2017
Civics education shouldn't be confined to dusty textbooks, as evidenced by this assortment of projects. In one unit, elementary students play out the presidential election--from campaigning to inauguration day--using the Storypath approach. In another project, 5th graders explore the controversy about Confederate monuments by studying a local memorial. And in a third project, high school students take part in a virtual internship with a fictional political communications firm. [This article discusses one of three projects covered in this issue's "Beyond Textbook Civics" section. For the other two projects, see EJ1159394 and EJ1159393.]
