Unified Technical Concepts--Phase II. Expand Application to Industrial Technologies and Adult Education. Final Report.
Technical Education Research Center, Waco, TX.
A project was conducted to develop a laboratory-based instructional system in physics for two-year technician programs that emphasizes both the analogies between basic physical principles and the applications of the principles in modern technology. The Unified Technical Concepts (UTC) system that was developed is (1) a reorganization of physics for practical interdisciplinary technician training, (2) a two-tiered series of modular instructional materials, and (3) a delivery system that incorporates module selection to tailor the courses to various student competencies and the technological requirements of a wide variety of specialized technician curricula. Thirteen concept modules form the backbone of UTC. Module titles include Force, Work, Rate, Momentum, Resistance, Power, Potential and Kinetic Energy, Force Transformers, Energy Convertors, Transducers, Vibrations and Waves, Time Constants, and Radiation. One hundred seventy application modules and eight supplementary modules complement the concept modules through the application of a single concept in a single energy system. Modules were pilot tested with students in programs at five schools and one employer site. Changes and additions were made based on the testing. (Appended material includes a description of the modules; an example concept module, application module, and support module; and a UTC short course for employed technicians.) (LRA)
