Bird, Debbie
Emphasis in this teacher's guide and activities booklet is on helping students analyze common advertising techniques and propaganda devices in television, magazine, and radio commercials. The unit is intended for use on the sixth grade level and can be integrated into language arts and/or social studies curricula. The unit is presented in two sections. Section I focuses on advertising vocabulary. Objectives are to identify effective advertising words, pictures, and actions, identify words which appeal to senses, and recognize how sense appeal words are used in advertisements. Students are involved in a variety of activities including collecting and analyzing magazine advertisements, making collages, listing vocabulary words often found in advertisements, and filling in worksheets. Worksheets, quizzes, and answer sheets are also included. Section II concentrates on helping students understand how to develop advertisements. Specific objectives are to teach students how to write television commercials, design and carry out a public service advertising campaign, understand how propaganda relates to advertising, and recognize common propaganda devices. Activities involve students in compiling advertising books from magazines, tape recording advertisements for selected products, filling in worksheets, making up and advertising a product, recommending an animal or character to help popularize an advertising campaign, and making posters illustrating school, neighborhood, or public problems.
