Information on teaching techniques, student evaluation, and campus resources is presented for new teaching assistants. Topics include: lecturing, leading discussion sessions (especially in the humanities and social sciences), teaching the laboratory section, teaching a section of a course, teaching a foreign language, office hours, and use of the blackboard and audiovisual equipment. The section on evaluating student performance covers exams and quizzes; papers, essays, and major class projects; homework; grading and record-keeping; and cheating and plagiarism. Academic policies affecting undergraduates and academic deadlines for undergraduate and graduate students are specified. The following campus resources are covered: study skills, tutoring, and academic skill building programs; academic advising and the academic deans' offices; programs for students with special needs; library services; audiovisual, computing and testing services; health services/personal counseling; and career advising and placement/vocational counseling programs. Information on U.S. education is included for foreign teaching assistants. A three-page annotated bibliography deals with general works, journals, and books on test construction. A list of teacher assistant handbooks is also provided. Appended is a six-page list of audiovisual resources for improving teaching methods and techniques. (SW)
