APN Perceptions of Telemedicine and Homecare for Heart Failure Patients
Martinez, Elea Ann
ProQuest LLC, D.N.P. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
Heart failure (HF) is a preventable and serious life threatening disease. Robust information is available on patient satisfaction when telehealth is used to manage chronic illness, but minimal information is available on Advance Practice Nurse (APN) satisfaction when APNs use this modality to deliver remote healthcare. The purpose of this project was to measure the level of satisfaction and determine perceived usefulness of telemedicine by APNs who use telemedicine for monitoring and managing of HF patients in their nursing practice. A sample group of N = 10 APNs who use telemedicine in homecare to care for HF patients were surveyed using the Telemedicine Satisfaction and Usefulness Questionnaire (TSUQ). Quantitative methods and descriptive statistics were utilized for the project's data analysis which revealed differences and similarities related to gender, age, years of APN experience, and years of using telemedicine in APN practice. Results demonstrated 70% of the surveyed APNs are satisfied with telemedicine and 90% of the surveyed APN's find telemedicine in homecare useful in the monitoring and management of HF patients with a p-value of (p = 0.027). The small sample size limits the significance of the project findings but provides the opportunity for future projects. The data supports the conclusion that satisfaction and usefulness are imperative pieces of data which impact the adoption of telemedicine by APNs as a viable modality to deliver necessary evidence-based nursing care to chronically ill rural patient populations remotely.
