When They Hear Us: The Experiences of Black and Latino/a Pre-Service Teachers
Hines, Mia
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
This research study examined the experiences of Black and Latino/a pre-service teachers who are enrolled in the BS/MS Teacher Preparation Programs within Florida State University's School of Teacher Education. Students within this study described their experiences in courses, how they navigated their clinical field experiences, and how their CTs utilized culturally responsive mentoring practices. The findings of this study suggest that students felt othered by peers and CTs and have a limited understanding of culturally responsive teaching due to inadequate information they received in their courses and clinical field experiences on this topic. Moreover, findings about their clinical field experiences highlight the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic, their appreciation for the hands-on experience they received, connections made with students and staff who share similar ethnic identities, and positive relationships with their CT.
