The Ancestry of Canadian English. With a Play by Kathy MacLellan.
Baeyer, C. V.
This book is designed for advanced classes of adults learning English as a second language. The first section uses maps and texts to show the historical background of some important English dialects. A brief look at Canadian French is included. The second section deals with the origins of words, focussing on the tremendous influence of French on English. The third section explores standard forms of English. A short play entitled "Visitors from Outer Space" raises controversial issues for class discussion. The aims of this text are to develop listening comprehension and reading skills, encourage controlled discussion on specific topics, and improve vocabulary growth. Each of the 15 units can be covered in about half an hour. Possible answers to many of the questions presented are given at the end of each section. (Author/JB)
