AIDS on Campus: A Legal Compendium.
Strohm, Leslie Chambers, Ed.
During the 1980s, AIDS emerged as a leading cause of death among young adults. Subsequently, no college or university can expect to escape from this problem. These collected articles were targeted for university, and health-science-center administrators. The information contained here is grouped under eight headings. Section 1, the medical background, examines definitions, modality, and mortality among AIDS patients. The next chapter, the legal background, details AIDS and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, along with other legal issues, such as litigation. Chapter 3 offers guidelines and updates on information provided by the Centers for Disease Control, while section 4 features position statements by groups like the American Medical Association, American Dental Association, and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Sections 5 and 6 address occupational safety and health issues and concerns surrounding the HIV-infected health-care worker. Student educational matters are covered in the next chapter with articles on AIDS transmission and the epidemic itself. The last section contains sample policies which universities can use for constructing their own AIDS guidelines. Each topic features additional resources readers may pursue to expand their knowledge of this disease. (RJM)
