Supporting IAAOC Members: Potential Localized Services
Lambert, Simone F.
Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling, v31 n1 p4-9 Oct 2010
For the past 37 years, the International Association of Addictions and Offender Counselors (IAAOC), a division of the American Counseling Association (ACA), has provided a home for offender counselors and eventually addictions counselors. Throughout that time, the organization's structure has mirrored that of ACA. For instance, the IAAOC (2004) bylaws allow for the development of state chapters of IAAOC similar to ACA's state branches. This long-standing model for providing localized support to IAAOC members has not been very successful in recent years. At present, there are only a handful of active IAAOC state chapters: Louisiana, North Carolina, and Washington. Therefore, IAAOC members from 47 other states are not receiving such vital services. This paper explores what localized services are needed and whether there is an alternative to the current structure of IAAOC state chapters for more effectively delivering needed services based on geographical area. An updated model for service delivery is suggested to assist IAAOC members. (Contains 1 table.)
