Scope Note:
Compulsive, uncontrollable urge to use substances (such as alcohol) or engage in activities (such as gambling) despite actual or potential negative physical, emotional, psychological, or social consequences for oneself or others. Consequences may include physiological or psychological dependence. If applicable, use the Descriptors "Drug Addiction" and "Alcoholism." From 2004-2008, this concept may have been indexed under "Substance Abuse."
