Minorities in Textbooks: A Study of Their Treatment in Social Studies Texts.
Kane, Michael B.
This study of 45 social studies texts widely used in American junior and senior high schools examines the current treatment of Negroes, Jews, and other minorities. It is stated that, despite past criticism of publishers and authors, "a significant number of texts published today continue to present a principally white, Protestant, Anglo-Saxon view of America, with the nature and problems of minority groups largely neglected." The text is divided into detailed discussion of the textbook treatment of the Jews, treatment of minorities under Nazism, and treatment of black Americans and other minorities in America. It is suggested that a remedy to this situation might begin with efforts to influence school systems to act as agents of change in conjunction with civil rights organizations. (Author/JW)
