This document describes competencies needed by persons who complete the Los Angeles Schools' emergency medical aide competency-based program, which is designed to enhance their ability to obtain certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). The overall competency statement ("goal") of the program heads each page and is defined by one or more "indicator" statements. Indicator statements are performance objectives, which, upon attainment, will establish competency for the stated goal. Indicator statements are further qualified by a series of "benchmark" statements. A benchmark is an observable behavior. Benchmarks describe what trainees will do to prove that they are demonstrating achievement of the performance objective. There may be one or more benchmarks (behaviors) for each indicator statement (performance objective). Benchmark statements are followed by an "assessment" statement that describes how the observer determines that the benchmark is achieved. The program includes 10 mastery tests with answers, a survey of prior occupational knowledge, and a checklist for the instructor. Topics covered by the competencies include the emergency medical system; anatomy, signs, triage; cardiorespiratory system; musculoskeletal system; nervous system; gastrointestinal-genitourinary systems; common medical emergencies; childbirth and common pediatric emergencies; drug and alcohol abuse; and common environmental injuries.
