Supporting the Transition of Learning Disabled Students to the Postsecondary Environment

Students with learning disabilities present a diverse spectrum of learning needs; research suggest they may have difficulty making the transition to the postsecondary environment. Learning disabled students at the subject high school were not successfully making the transition from the secondary to the postsecondary environment. This study was based on Dewey's experiential education model, Kolb's learning style model, Mezirow's theory of transformational leaning, and Knowles' theory of andragogy. The research questions examined the self-perceptions of learning disabled adults about their success since graduation, factors that influenced their decision to attend college, and commonalities they shared while attending college. Participants who had successfully transitioned to the postsecondary environment were interviewed. Data were examined using constant comparative analysis and then coded for alignment with the research questions. The following themes emerged: future goals, self-awareness, personal experiences and influences, emotional aspects, and educational program effectiveness. Findings indicated that transitioning learning disabled students looked to educators and parents for educational guidance and emotional support, and those who felt supported were more successful. Further, these students needed to learn about self-awareness, their rights, and the transitional process in order to have the tools to advocate for themselves at the postsecondary level. The positive social change implication is enhanced knowledge for both educators and learning disabled students about all aspects of the transitional process, including self-advocacy and motivational tools, in order that these students may have a more successful transition to the rigors of a postsecondary environment.
