Find Meaning in Middle School Physical Education
Pagnano, Karen
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n4 p12-14 Jul 2006
The purpose of this article is to provide readers with several suggestions and ideas for promoting meaning and meaningfulness for middle school students in physical education based on their unique developmental characteristics. To help physical educators create movement experiences that are meaningful for middle school students, the author proposes four ideas that include: (1) acknowledging and understanding the unique qualities of middle school students; (2) adopting constructivist student-centered approaches to instruction; (3) using cooperative learning to enhance social interdependence; and (4) using an instructional model and strategies that require critical thinking and foreground delight in movement as steps to create meaningful movement experiences.
