The English strong verbs, throughout their history, have shown a tendency to be attracted into the large class of regular verbs. The retention of strong inflection for some verbs is a phenomenon that many scholars have sought to explain. The dissertation presents hypotheses that strong preterites have historically correlated with long vowels, and that some verb classes prefer initial consonant clusters. A mathematical model using logistic regression is used to test linguistic hypotheses for the survival or loss of strong inflection. These hypotheses center on frequency and on the featural composition of the verbs, and include both hypotheses developed by the author and those developed by other scholars.
