Cleaning up Trumpet Sound: Some Paths to Better Tone
Zingara, James J.
Teaching Music, v12 n3 p42 Dec 2004
Of all the factors used to assess trumpet players, the one that distinguishes the established professional from the student is sound quality. While a good sound may be called "full," "rich," or "dark," poor sound is often described as "constricted," "tight," "thin," or "fuzzy." Although students' concept of good sound is important, many times there are physical problems that must be addressed before they can produce the desired tone. This article addresses some of the most common student sound problems, and offers solutions in the form of student drills, exercises, concepts, and methods to help improve the airstream as it passes through the instrument. It also points out other reasons for fuzzy sounds that can be attributed to equipment such as worn or missing keypads, or leaks in side sleeves, and recommends that teachers check equipment first when investigating sound problems. In conclusion, the article recommends that teachers encourage students to listen to recordings and live performances. If the mind can "hear" a sound, it is more likely that the body will be able to produce it.
