Architectural Considerations for an Educational Research Center for Child Development (ERCCD).
Linder, Ronald
Architectural considerations and recommendations to facilitate the work of an Educational Research Center for Child Development are presented. The purposes of the center are to demonstrate model programs for children, train student and child development professionals, and facilitate and disseminate research on young children. Program demonstrations could be facilitated by the construction of observation areas such as open decks and classrooms equipped with one-way glass with appropriate classroom design and furnishings. Training of students and professionals could be aided by construction of tutoring rooms for individual and small-group activities and a combined seminar room/library outfitted with movie screens, video equipment, and a one-way window to provide a view of the demonstration room. Since the center functions as a research facility, microphones and audio equipment could be permanently installed in classrooms to monitor children's speech. Other suggestions concern the design of office space, lounges, and reception areas and of nursing, laundry, and kitchen facilities to meet the special needs of children. Also discussed are building location, access for the handicapped, and provision for future expansion. (DR)
