Inquiry, Land Snails, and Environmental Factors
Barrow, Lloyd H.; Krantz, Patrick D.
Science Activities: Classroom Projects and Curriculum Ideas, v41 n4 p33-36 Win 2005
Land snails are common invertebrates that fascinate children. Unfortunately, they are seldom used for activities in the science classroom. Snails are inexpensive, take up little space in the classroom, and require only low maintenance, and their learning dividends can be enormous. For example, students can use them in inquiry-based activities that employ the four-questions strategy (Cothron, Giese, and Rezba 1996). The four-questions strategy helps students improve their skills in conducting quality scientifically-oriented investigations while they develop their understanding of inquiry. Through the use of this strategy, the students will be able to better understand what they need to do to answer their scientifically-oriented questions. The activities described in this article are appropriate for grades 3-8 students. (Contains 1 figure.)
