Current Problems of Teacher Education. Report of a Meeting of International Experts.
Yates, Alfred, Ed.
This report is the outcome of an international meeting of the UNESCO Institute for Education in Hamburg in 1969. To stimulate interest in the potentialities of research in the field of teacher education, it incorporates the major conclusions reached at the meeting concerning those current problems in teacher education to which methods of empirical research or processes or sustained critical analysis could most profitably be applied. Section 1 deals with the issues which arise in discussing the broad structural and organizational aspects of teacher education: (1) institutions for teacher education, their character and internal organization, and the scope of their activities; (2) preservice courses; (3) inservice courses; (4) the staffs of teacher education institutions; and (5) the recruitment of students. Section 2 deals with curriculum and content of both academic and professional courses. Section 3 considers the methods of teacher education: (1) techniques of teaching; (2) the role of educational research; (3) organizing practical experiences; and (4) examinations and assessments. Section 4 includes some general comments of the organization and design of research. Three appendixes, which deal with teacher education in the U.S., professional preparation in the light of recent advances, and current trends and problems were prepared for a UNESCO meeting in Paris in 1967.
