The purpose of this report is to identify changes that need to be made in the Saskatchewan mathematics curriculum and to provide the curriculum writers and advisory committee with sufficient background information to develop a revised program and to evaluate teaching materials currently available. The purpose of Part 1 of the guide is to examine the goals of mathematics education in more detail. Chapters 1 and 2 discuss how the study of mathematics can prepare students to function in society as consumers and employees, and as informed and responsible citizens. Chapter 3 examines the argument that mathematics plays a significant role in developing a liberally educated people: those who can think logically, possess good working habits, and appreciate the cultural and aesthetic merits of mathematics. Chapter 4 concludes Part 1 by examining the effect of technology on the need to include traditional algorithmic knowledge in the mathematics curriculum. The intent of Part 2 is to provide the curriculum writers with a good background in the issues surrounding curriculum development in mathematics and in research related to student understanding of mathematics. Chapter 5 provides an overview and critique of the current elementary and middle years mathematics programs. Chapters 6 through 14 discuss the following mathematical areas as they apply to a revised elementary and middle years program: "Problem Solving"; "Foundations of Number"; "Basic Number Combinations"; "Computational Knowledge"; "Estimation"; "Measurement"; "Geometry and Spatial Sense"; "Data Organization and Analysis"; and "Algebra." A discussion of the current secondary mathematics program is presented in chapter 15 and recommendations for revising the secondary mathematics program are proposed in chapter 16.
