In this article, the author presents a rejoinder to John E. Hull. Van Brummelen first states his appreciation of John Hull's thoughtful evaluation of his views of curriculum, views in which many Christian educators have played a part. It has been several decades since the author spelled out what Hull calls an "education for discipleship" orientation. Here, Van Brummelen examines whether it is still functional, whether it has had some influence on school praxis, and whether it needs revision to make it more fruitful. Particularly pertinent in Hull's paper is his contention that living a life of discipleship as a school community is at least as significant as having an orientation in shaping school curriculum. The author contends that Hull does not distinguish sufficiently between a curriculum orientation and a curriculum conception. As a result, Hull fails to see clearly that while different curriculum orientations do lead students to experience a different "story," differing orientations do not always or necessarily lead to different educational experiences.
