Preparing Tomorrow's Science Teachers
Hammer, Margaret; Polnick, Barbara
Educational Leadership, v64 n4 p80-83 Dec 2006-Jan 2007
Many undergraduates seeking elementary teaching certification are uncomfortable with or uninterested in science; however, these future teachers are charged with the responsibility of teaching science to young students. Hammer and Polnick surveyed science methods students at Sam Houston State University and found that only about half of them rated their elementary, middle school, high school, and college science experiences as "good" or "exceptional." To help future teachers prepare to teach science to young students, Hammer and Polnick advocate giving them hands-on experiences with science in their methods class. They share strategies that have helped students at SHSU become more comfortable with and excited about teaching science to their future students.
