Using an Artificial Rock Outcrop to Teach Geology

Teaching Earth science without exposure to rock outcrops limits students depth of understanding of Earth's processes, limits the concept of scale from their spatial visualization imaging, and distorts their perception of geologic time (Totten 2003). Through a grant funded by the National Science Foundation, an artificial rock outcrop was constructed and is currently being used to teach geology to middle school, high school, and college students. The University of New Orleans Facility Renovations and Design Group, working from a Styrofoam model I created, built the outcrop. The outcrop is located on the university campus, which is centrally located in New Orleans and easily accessible by local schools. (Contains 2 figures.)
