What this author admired most about Sally Smith was the fact that she was a visionary about people and what they could accomplish. She saw more potential in a person--young or old--than anybody or even they themselves, frankly, had ever even considered possible. She was a genius at seeing the potential in people, expecting them to find it in themselves, and to put it to good use! The author says that the best lesson Smith taught her graduate students was to love and value teaching through games. Smith's message was that teaching could always be effective for the student with learning disabilities if teachers--in the academics or the Arts believed that it was their job to reach the child--to keep trying new mediums and in new ways until they found success. And along this journey, to keep learning enjoyable, hands-on, and tailored to what interests and sensory systems peaked the child's engagement.
