What School Psychologists Should Know about Prader-Willi Syndrome
Dryden, Mary
Communique, v47 n5 p4, 6 Jan-Feb 2019
School psychologists are asked to provide a number of different services in schools, including evaluating and providing recommendations to educators and parents on children and adolescents with rare genetic conditions. One genetic disorder with physical, cognitive, and behavioral features is Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS). PWS is a unique genetic disorder with specific physical, cognitive, and behavioral features that cause a host of developmental problems. Characteristics of PWS include impaired speech and language skills, delayed motor milestones, rigid concrete thinking, obsessive tendencies, increased appetite and reduced satiety (always hungry and never feels full), and life threatening morbid obesity (Dykens et al., 2011). Students with PWS will likely require special education services to address their specific needs based on their unique cognitive and behavioral profile. Identified recommendations and interventions in this article will not only be effective with this population, but also have applicability to other disorders with similar behavioral characteristics including individuals with intellectual disabilities, autism, attention difficulties, and emotional problems.
