These defects may be caused by mutation or alteration of a gene, which occurs randomly or because of an environmental trigger; by a variation or different form of a gene; or by an abnormal chromosome number or structure. Prior to 2004, the Identifier "Genetic Diseases" may have been used to index this concept.
