Competence Is for Everyone. Unit 3: Male and Female. Upper Level. (Student Text and Teacher's Edition).
Kent, Martha Whalen; And Others
These materials are part of a four-module series, "Competence Is for Everyone," designed to specify and reduce limitations on the learning and use of skills that people experience because of their sex or race. The series identifies three areas that function to maintain inequalities: the process of making judgments or appraisals, practices of social institutions in education, employment, and the mass media, and legal precedents and historical antecedents. Appraisal is treated as it occurs with respect to group membership, i.e., sex and minority status. This module, written for students at the upper elementary level, examines appraisal with respect to gender through activities focussed on: (1) identifying personal and social expectations based on gender; (2) recognizing sex stereotypes portrayed in textbooks and comic books; (3) assessing the status of employed women; and (4) reviewing recent legal changes and their implications for future gender roles. Additionally, a teacher's guide with instructions and worksheets accompanies this student text. (Author/HLM)
