STEM Careers Days at City and Islington College
Swinscoe, David
Education in Science, n244 p14-15 Sep 2011
In many UK secondary schools, pupils, parents and teachers have limited knowledge about careers available through studying Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and the progression pathways to these careers. Pupils need confidence that studying science will lead them to something useful and of value to them in the future. Pupils' awareness of STEM careers is largely limited to professionals with whom they come into contact, or those portrayed in the media: doctors, nurses, teachers, forensic scientists, etc. In reality, there is a plethora of STEM careers available, many of which are in areas of demand and at the forefront of technology--but unknown to the pupils. To address these issues, a project was set up in Islington by Cambridge Education (Islington Council's long-time partner in the provision of educational support services) and City and Islington College--the local FE College and provider of sixth form education. This article discusses the project which focused on raising awareness of STEM careers for Year 9 (age 14) pupils at local schools. The ultimate aims were to increase the uptake of science, and to improve pupil aspirations by improving three key areas--awareness of STEM careers; knowledge of progression pathways; and raising the profile of science.
