Using the Internet in Secondary Schools.
De Cicco, Eta; Farmer, Mike; Hargrave, James
This book provides practical information for secondary school teachers on using the Internet to enhance learning. The first chapter looks at how to make the best use of a World Wide Web browser, gives some general tips for using the Web, and examines more advanced topics such as downloading, plug-ins, and using the Web "offline." Tips on searching the Web are provided in the second chapter, including getting the best from search engines, common search features, and examples of various kinds of search engines. The next chapter addresses designing Web pages for schools, including necessary tools and the basics of site design. The fourth chapter concentrates on collaborative working and examines a range of other Internet tools. The final chapter focuses on using the Internet in the curriculum. It is organized in the curriculum areas of science (physics, chemistry, biology), mathematics, English, geography, history, design and technology, music, art, modern languages, and religious education. Each of these areas of study is presented with an introduction and a number of related activities. In most cases, the activities consist of teacher notes and pupil activity sheets. The relevant sections of the United Kingdom National Curriculum are referenced for each curriculum area and activity. (MES)
