Facing Facebook: A Guide for Nonteens
Siegle, Del
Gifted Child Today, v34 n2 p14-19 Spr 2011
Facebook is a social networking phenomenon that has taken the United States by storm and gained universal popularity. Facebook has more than one-half trillion members; 1 out of every 12 people on the planet has a Facebook account. Some argue the interactive nature of social networking sites (SNSs) such as Facebook, as well as other interactive technologies such as video gaming and virtual world experiences, can radically change the educational system. They suggest that these technologies provide opportunities to better motivate students by engaging learners rather than allowing learners to function primarily as passive observers of the educational process (Ziegler, 2007). The purpose of this article is threefold. First, educators cannot ignore the important role that social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace play in young people's social and self-development. Having a social networking account is a rite of passage, and educators and parents need to understand the important developmental role these sites play. Second, everyone using social networking sites should to be aware of privacy issues and social expectations associated with their use. Finally, educators, like those in the business world, can begin to explore how to harness the power of social networks such as Facebook to enhance student learning opportunities and possibly change the landscape of education.
