Written with teachers, administrators, and students of Purcell Marian High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, this book is grounded in a 2-year action research project that created an inclusive high school. Chapter 1 provides snapshots of interactions in an inclusive high school and refutes some of the concerns expressed by teachers and administrators. Chapter 2 describes the qualities of an inclusive high school, and Chapter 3 discusses issues related to change and the continual evolution of inclusion. The following chapter looks at adolescents who are typically developing, as well as their peers with disabilities. Chapter 5 follows with a description of the nature of community in an inclusive high school and ways to support such a community. Chapter 6 begins to discuss teaching and designing instruction in inclusive classrooms. Chapters 7-9 discuss enhancing the development of prosocial behavior, accommodations and adaptations, and assessing learning. Chapter 10 describes participation in Individualized Education Programs and legal issues. The following chapter provides notes on helping new faculty members "join up." The last chapters address participation in extracurricular activities, describe issues related to African American students, and discuss some of the issues and questions that emerge as students enter the workforce.
