The Environmental Scrapbook. A Collection of Articles on Environmental Issues for Use in Secondary Schools. Global Issues Reading Kit #1. Revised.
Gage, Andrew, Ed.; Ockenden, Sandy, Ed.
This document presents student readings that address a variety of environmental issues. The individual articles present a global perspective that is both alarming and hopeful. Drawing from events and situations in both the northern and southern hemispheres, the articles describe a world in crisis. By critically examining the status quo, the articles attempt to get to the roots of the crisis, then move on to describe avenues for change and reasons for hope. Readings appear under the chapter headings "Environmental Ideas and Problems"; "Atmosphere"; "Energy"; "Water Pollution"; "Waste Disposal"; "Mega-Development"; "Forests"; "Biodiversity"; "War and the Environment"; "Earth Summit"; and "Solutions." The document concludes with a set of suggested activities and ideas for teachers. Teachers can use the readings individually or as a unit. (SG)
