Revitalize Electrical Program with Renewable Energy Focus
Karns, Robert J.
Tech Directions, v72 n2 p13-17 Sep 2012
Starting a renewable energy technology (RET) program can be as simple as shifting the teaching and learning focus of a traditional electricity program toward energy production and energy control systems. Redirecting curriculum content and delivery to address photovoltaic solar (PV solar) technology and small wind generation systems is a natural shift for electrical courses that may have lost some momentum because of the influx of miniaturization and throw-away electronics. In adding renewable energy, the electrical technology curriculum can be innovative, cutting edge, and still meet traditional standards and objectives. A focus on renewable energy production methods offers a broad platform to support teaching electrical technology applications in the 21st century. Teachers who incorporate RET into their program can refresh and revitalize electricity/electronics labs. And students, their parents, and the community at large can learn about technology that promises to play a prominent role in 21st century America. (Contains 4 figures and 5 photos.)
