Our Choice to Homeschool: Stepping off the Merry-Go-Round
Rivero, Lisa
Understanding Our Gifted, v16 n3 p20-22 Spr 2004
Today's after-school programs and sports are often year-round activities, and children are pressured to focus on one activity to the exclusion of others. Homework for students who attend highly competitive high schools can take three to five hours per night. Not only schools, but the whole culture is different. People listen to music through private headphones, have phone conversations in the car, and drink coffee from paper cups while on the go. They rush their children to get them out the door in the morning, drop them off at extra-curricular activities, eat separate dinners to accommodate out of sync schedules, and wait for students to finish homework before saying goodnight. Round and round they go, making isolation and rushing a way of life. Learning at home offers the possibility to step off the merry-go-round and see life in a less hurried way. This view has given family a clearer vision of the education parents want for their son. When homeschooling, parents can adopt an approach to education that fits their overall life goals for their children. More importantly, by paying close attention to the progress of each child and to the child's readiness and interests, homeschool parents are able to change their educational approaches as necessary.
