EUROPA Project: Education for Learning
Martinez, Eliseo Gomez-Senent; Batalla, Isabel Carda; Domenech, Ana Canizares
European Journal of Engineering Education, v29 n2 p299-306 2004
The Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) is immersed in an educational system mainly based on master classes, and although graduates benefit from a good preparation, there is an appreciable rate of failure among the students. The UPV is aware of the restructuring requirements of the current system and consequently, and in accordance with the Bologna and Prague agreements, the EUROPA Project was created in the year 2000 with a global transformation in mind for both education organizations and teaching-learning processes. The implementation of the programme has been voluntary and progressive, allowing the different teaching units and their professors to join freely the agreement with their own particularities and encouraged by the unconditional support of all the services at the university. The learning improvement programme comprises a definition of sub-programmes AME2-3: new teaching-learning methods and improvement of assessment systems. The new model of methodological diversity defined by the university is summarized in a pentagon with five balanced dimensions: theory, seminars, problem-solving skills, laboratory practices and activities. Furthermore, learning assessment is moving towards a continuous multicriteria assessment able to value the acquisition of both knowledge and know-how. This paper lays out the methodology pursued, the tools implemented for managing the change, the teaching files, the incentive programmes, etc. (Contains 2 tables and 2 figures.)
