This curriculum manual provides 8 days of training for child protective services (CPS) personnel (social workers and administrators) working in the White Mountain Apache tribal community. Each of the first seven units in the manual contains a brief description of contents, course objectives, time required, key concepts, possible discussion topics, instructional materials and resources, an outline of the presentation, review questions, and references. Some units also contain a glossary, worksheets, and hands-on activities. The units cover: (1) White Mountain Apache community context (cultural values, community family life, and family lifestyles from traditional to contemporary); (2) medical and psycho-social issues in CPS (failure to thrive, indicators of sexual child abuse, diagnosis of physical and sexual abuse, and abuser characteristics); (3) tribal and federal laws and legal issues in CPS; (4) CPS case management processes and procedures; (5) White Mountain Apache tribal protocols for CPS reporting, investigation, agency roles and responsibilities, and juvenile and criminal court procedures; (6) tribal community practice (tribal government, casework supervision, and program administration); and (7) healing and wellness (traditional beliefs, spirituality, and prevention of worker burnout).
