Teaching during COVID-19: A Focus on Educators' Mental Health, Well-Being, and Thoughts towards Attrition
Marci L. Mastell-Freedy
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Concordia University Chicago
The principal purpose of the study was to understand the lived experiences of educators who taught during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential effects of teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic on teachers' mental health, well-being and risk of attrition. Considering that the pandemic is just a few years old, research on the implications for teachers is scarce. A qualitative narrative inquiry design was used to solicit post pandemic narratives and then analyzed and coded for themes. Semi structured interviews were conducted as well as the use of a reflexive journal and document review to deepen inquiry during the second phase. Findings and implications are shared which support the need for more support for educators in decreasing job demands and improving mental health during crisis teaching.
