A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Post 9/11 Veterans Transitioning from Military Service to Postsecondary Education
John Joseph Chacon
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Grand Canyon University
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how post 9/11 military veterans described their transitions from military service to postsecondary education in the southwestern United States. The problem statement was: It is not known how post 9/11 military veterans describe their transitions from military service to postsecondary education in the southwestern United States. The study answered four research questions: How do post 9/11 military veterans describe their situation for transitioning from military service to postsecondary education in the southwestern United States?; How do post 9/11 military veterans describe their self-image as they transitioned from military service to postsecondary education in the southwestern United States?; How do post 9/11 military veterans describe the support received as they transitioned from military service to postsecondary education in the southwestern United States?; and What strategies, if any, do post 9/11 military veterans use to transition from military service to postsecondary education in the southwestern United States? Schlossberg's theory of adult transition was the theoretical framework for this study. Using a qualitative methodology and a descriptive study design, the researcher analyzed and synthesized the data from a two-part questionnaire and interviews. The sample consisted of twelve post 9/11 military veteran students. Data coding procedures determined specific patterns that emerged in the analysis. A total of fifteen themes and six subthemes emerged. Findings of this study may be able to assist scholars and military leaders with developing future procedures on transition preparation for the post 9/11 military veteran student population.
