A thesis project was conducted to design, develop, implement, and evaluate a job aid used by shipping department employees in a dental laboratory. The job aid was developed in preference to training to solve the organization's performance problem. Task analysis was performed to identify the shipping clerks' duties. These tasks were stated in the form of goals. Instructional objectives were then written with entry behaviors defined. The instructional objectives were sequenced according to task relationships that eventually led to the instruction. The learning activity specification was produced depicting the proper selection, type, and size of dental product. After consideration of several types of job aids, a pocket aid or wallet card was tried. However, some clerks forgot to keep the cards in their wallets, resulting in confusion and increased training time. Therefore, in addition to the pocket cards, placards were located at the appropriate bins for various articles to be shipped. The job aid was developed and implemented smoothly, resulting in a documented performance improvement. Summative evaluation of the project shows that the job aid was not only cheaper than training ($125 versus $894), but resulted in annual savings of more than $50,000 to the organization.
