The Impact of Career and Technical Education on Native American Males
Neilson, Brent Alan
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northern Arizona University
The results of this qualitative descriptive study provide insight into the impact Career and Technical Education has on Native American male students in Northern Arizona. This study was created in response to the lack of research, especially qualitative research in this area. Moreover, it provided Native youth an opportunity to share their stories and allow their voices to be heard. Focusing on three similarly sized high schools across Northern Arizona, I recruited freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior high school self-identified Native American male students who were enrolled in one or more CTE class at the time of the study. In total, 18 students participated in the focus groups. All 18 young men also agreed to participate in individual follow-up interviews. The student voices expressed that CTE prepared them to enter college and provided them the skills needed to obtain employment upon graduation, in their field of study. The results also showed that CTE teachers, due to their industry expertise, and specialized technical and college training, have a sharp impact on the Native youth in this study. Real world, hands-on experiences in industry-specific classroom labs also have a deep impact on Native youth. Due to the limited research on CTE and its impact on Native youth, it is recommended that additional studies be conducted.
