Intercultural communication focuses on understanding the relationship between culture and communication. The goal of such understanding is to assist students in developing awareness, competency, and sensitivity in communicating with persons who have cultural backgrounds (and perspectives) different from their own, or what Young Yun Kim (2001) refers to as "intercultural personhood": a way of life that is called for by the increasingly intercultural realities of the world. The intercultural person is a type whose cognitive, affective, and behavioral characteristics are not limited but open to growth beyond the psychological parameters of his or her culture. It is a journey that both students and the professor take. There is no better way to describe and assess this experience than through the autoethnographic narrative. In this autoethnography, the author discusses how her spirituality and cultural identity informs and affects her teaching philosophy and pedagogical practices, especially in the teaching of intercultural communication.
