The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of listening to excerpts from children's stories about Mexican-Americans on children's attitudes toward Mexican-Americans, self-concepts, and interests. The sample consisted of 220 sixth-graders. Once weekly for six weeks, experimental groups heard excerpts about Mexican-Americans, while control groups heard excerpts with nonethnic themes (approved by a Mexican-American panel). After six weeks, subjects were given the Semantic Differential of Attitudes toward Mexican-Americans and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory. From the findings, it was concluded that listening to excerpts about Mexican-Americans did not consistently promote positive attitudes toward Mexican-Americans; in the experimental group, ethnic attitudes of the males were more positive; treatment had no significant effect on self-concept or interest scores; and negative comments about the ethnic theme increased during the experiment.
