Training Early Childhood Educators: Computer Assisted Instruction Courses in Diagnostic Teaching. Final Report.
Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park. Computer-Assisted Instruction Lab.
The Computer Assisted Remedial Education (CARE) project developed two computer-assisted instructional (CAI) courses. The objective was to train educational personnel to use diagnostic teaching in working with preschool and primary grade children who exhibit learning problems. Emphasis was placed upon the use of new technology in providing inservice education for professionals who have difficulty in returning to training centers for special instruction. Materials from 13 publishers and numerous other sources were assembled onto a computer tape, accompanied by over 1500 slides, 1200 hand-drawn graphics, and 1200 audio messages; the frame-by-frame print-out of the final product totalled 78,000 pages. The on-line and companion off-line materials were tested, revised and disseminated by IBM 1500 computer systems placed in mobile CAI laboratories operated by the Pennsylvania State University. The course was also successfully delivered by mobile operations to sites in Indiana, Georgia, Texas, Illinois, and the District of Columbia and was used at several universities. It was concluded that the project was sufficiently successful to warrant the development of other technology-based, mobile in-service courses. (PB)
