Helping Children Develop Resiliency: Providing Supportive Relationships

Helping children develop resiliency begins with positive, meaningful connections between teachers and students. This article defines the importance of encouraging children to develop characteristics related to resiliency including confidence in their ability to bounce back from setbacks, overcome challenges and frustrations. Furthermore, critical resources as well as teaching strategies that can help children build resiliency are outlined for creating supportive relationships. These critical resources include: caring and committed adults, children's inner resources, supportive environments, and adults modeling respect and resilience.
