R. U. Robot Ready? Carnegie Mellon University Students Face the Societal Implications of AI
Keating, Jennifer
Liberal Education, v105 n3-4 Sum-Fall 2019
As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to develop in its sophistication and integration into contemporary society, how well are educators preparing students to navigate this reality? Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is harnessing the expertise of faculty members across campus to create innovative curricular offerings that expose students, regardless of their majors, to many modes of inquiry into the ethical and social ramifications of AI and other technologies. These emerging efforts introduce students in technical fields, the humanities, and the social sciences to questions that will doubtlessly persist as AI advances in virtually all areas of our economic markets, public governance, and private lives. The only way to successfully tackle the challenges of AI, as well as a range of other societal concerns--from climate change to racism to political rhetoric and democracy--is through cross-disciplinary inquiry and collaboration. An interdisciplinary approach offers the necessary tools to attend to challenges and the changes already underway.
