Using Sports and Physical Education to Strengthen Reading Skills.
Gentile, Lance M.
Written primarily for coaches and physical education instructors, this booklet also may be used by reading teachers to diversify their programs and motivate students to read. The ideas and exercises presented are intended to combine the forces of intellectual and physical activity and have been developed through actual teaching. Chapters discuss (1) the nature of reading; (2) how reading fits sports and physical education; (3) reading activities for the sports and physical education curriculum; (4) evaluating grade levels of difficulty for reading materials; and (5) coaches and physical educators as models of literacy. Appended is a bibliography for sports and physical education with grade level reading difficulty. Books, magazines, paperback books, and other references are provided for baseball, basketball, football, gymnastics, tennis, track and field, volleyball, soccer, hockey, boxing, swimming, and horseback riding.
