Street Wise Part 2: Educating Children for Safe Bicycling
Crider, Linda B.; Hall, Amanda K.
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n2 p8-13 Mar 2006
This part of the "Street Wise" series incorporates essential bicycle safety skills into a one week bike unit, designed for 3rd through 6th graders. These skills require much repetition and practice but can help children develop safe traffic behaviors that save lives, such as stopping, scanning, signaling, street crossing, and avoiding hazards. Florida elementary and middle school teachers and school resource officers go through a 10-hour training workshop to become knowledgeable and proficient in teaching this unit to their students. The purpose of this series is to encourage all physical education teachers to implement bicycle education into their teaching agenda. (Contains 3 figures and 4 resources.)
