Student Engagement and Teacher Guidance in Meaningful Mathematics: Enduring Principles
Freeman, Gregory D.; Lucius, Lisa B.
Mathematics Teacher, v102 n3 p164-167 Oct 2008
In mathematics, developing a conceptual understanding and observing properly modeled methods rarely lead to successful student performance. The student must participate. As with bike riding, participation with monitoring and guidance makes initial efforts meaningful and beneficial. In this article, the authors share a bike riding experience and discuss how this experience became a guiding principle in teaching mathematics. The authors assert that students learn more effectively by engaging with meaningful mathematics under competent guidance.
