For many years, higher education institutions have been harvesting the low-hanging fruit when it comes to budget reductions and adjustments. Easier changes have often been made--such as cutting administration, using more adjunct faculty, contracting out inefficient or non effective auxiliary operations and so forth. Until recently such strategies, combined with tuition increases, enrollment growth, and other changes, have allowed colleges and universities to get by. Things are different now, so different that campus leaders may need to contemplate more perilous options to sustain their institutions' financial health. Some changes that may be necessary include the better management and use of faculty time; curricular streamlining; limiting excessive compensation of top administrators, coaches, and star faculty; and refraining from building new facilities.
