This paper explores the auto/biographicity of ethnographic research, describing the way in which our research pursuits can be seen as the replaying of past agendas. It looks specifically at the auto/biographic interview as part of the ethnographic data collected, positing it as the site of co-construction of new memory, and the re-enactment of past conflict for both interviewee and interviewer. The descriptions are based on long term ethnographic psychosocial auto/biographic research with mentally-ill adult learners, but in this paper it is mainly the researcher who is foregrounded, enabling an investigation into the impact on the researcher of undertaking narrative research with vulnerable participants. The absence in "this" paper, therefore, of a perspective on the possible therapeutic or disturbing effects on the participants engaging in the auto/biographic research is deliberate. The paper also seeks to explore questions regarding the use and potential of auto/biographic narrative data as a strand of ethnographic research for exploring questions of learning and pedagogy.
